We’re bringing in the new year with an all-too-brief introduction to Season 8′s co-host, Natasha Clark – single mom of four, student, feminist, goofball, poet and author of the (currently dormant) blog Men Are Women Too.

I met Natasha during my year of bardo wandering, and later had the so-crazy-it-just-might-work idea of asking her to be my guest for a season of podcasts.  Even though she’s super busy going to school, raising her kids, having an adorable GF and being facebook friends with Mr. Deity – lucky us – she still said yes.

Natasha was a Mormon and now she’s not, and she has the sexy sundress and residual shame to prove it.

Today she tells us a little (way too little) bit about leaving home at 15, becoming a Mormon at 16, getting married at 18 – and somewhere along the way discovering the sweaty annoyance of magical underwear, ahem I’m sorry, I mean, garments.

Also covers (with equally frustrating lack of detail) the phenomena of Mormon happiness, anti-depressants, and whether or not life is meant to be a struggle (like “I think a lot of the things Mormons say have to be hard, don’t have to be hard; and the things they say are easy are actually hard.”)

Jay and Bethany talk about all kinds of good stuff, including wearing leather and speedos, social anxiety, the queer trans community, cockroaches, drinking, drugs, bad singing, not fitting in, depression, cross-dressing, being yourself, being happy under any circumstance, and finding friends who like you for who you are.

Jay says “Back in my day you had to carry your queerness uphill, both ways, barefoot, in the snow…” We’ve come a long way, baby!  Thanks in no small part to people like Bethany and Jay.

But, as you’ll hear, evenBrian Andreas Bittersweet when Jonathan is crazy and curled up in a ball on the floor, he’s still happy – because he’s allowed to curl up in a ball on the floor. (Speaking from my own experience I can say that yes, it really is that simple.)

He also talks about what he’s learned from his cats, about developing an appreciation for everything, about his fiancé’s skepticism of curling up in a ball (and why he’s grateful for that too),  and his new motto (“take your time as it comes”) which he likes for lots of reasons but especially because it doesn’t exactly make sense.

We unveil our new theories about the value of talking (or lack thereof).  Jonathan’s is that he agrees with everything that anyone has ever TRIED to say, it’s just that nobody ever succeeds at saying what they’re trying to say.  Mine is loosely connected to that picture going around of Rick Santorum composed of thousands of tiny pictures of gay porn.

We swoon over Brian Andreas’s art for a while, then get to wondering: What makes us want to curl up in a ball?  In response, Jonathan muses about people exposing their sensitive regions (unlike most animals), suggests that perhaps we slouch in order to hide, and reports some curiosity about the difference between putting palms up or down in meditation.Strange People by Brian Andreas

To top it all off, The Twenty-One Balloons by The World is Not Flat brings us another musical exploration of what it’s like to be a human being.

A pretty fun-filled and exciting bunch of things for a show about curling up in a ball, doncha think?

I can attest that all of this is true (that her four children are fascinating, that they trust her, and that Kara has had to humble herself gallingly in order for this to be the case).

There is hardly a parent I’ve ever known who wouldn’t be wise to learn from her example.  (I mean, if you want to learn from your kids and heal yourself, that is.  And I know all too well that many don’t.)

Thanks Kara, for being honest and real, as always.  And thanks Devon Sproule for sharing your music with us again, this time with the tune Healthy Parents, Happy Couple.

Among the most agonizing kinds of growth that I’ve had to do, in facing up to who I am and what’s inside of me, is in relation to my kids. That question came to mind when I heard that folks were congregating in cities all over the country in some kind of an undefined protest against … all the bad things.

In an attempt to make sense of the whole shebang, I skyped with some smart cute people* who filled me in.  Yet, as is so common at times like these, the answers simply made way in my brain for a bazillion more questions.  C’est la vie.

I guess if it were possible to identify and fix “the problem” in 30 minutes, it would’ve been done by now, so I’ll try not to feel badly that I haven’t yet been able to arrive at anything too helpful here.  Perhaps it’s time for me to get back to some breathing and see how that goes.  I’ll be sure to let you know.

In today’s conversation Daniel talks about what motivates people to grow, the evolution of humanity, what parents can do when they see their mistakes, and why he might sound upset when he’s in a car careering toward a cliff.

Although Daniel and I don’t always see or articulate things in the same way, I am so grateful for the courageous work he has done and continues to do – not only for himself, but for the planet, for the world’s children and for the child inside each one of us.

I also want to take a moment to thank all of you who’ve listened to all 16 episodes of this Season Six.  I commend you for taking the time to hear, think, talk and breathe about so many painful and challenging ideas.  I’m pretty sure it hasn’t always been easy for any of us.

I don’t usually know what the point of this podcast is, but I sometimes have a bit of hope that it might somehow help the world come closer to being a safe, nurturing and supportive place in which human beings can thrive.  I don’t know how these things work, but I s’pose a girl can always dream.   Thanks for being a part of that journey.

Another thing that gets me muddled up is that I still haven’t even been able to identify whether my past relationships were fundamentally “good” or “bad.”  Not a great place to start when looking for decisive clarity.

There was one thing that Daniel said today that I found not only humorous but also I think it’s a clue about the “gap” I’ve been exploring lately, and possibly a clue about many other things as well.  When I said to Daniel something like “Your website isn’t really addressed for parents,” he replied “Well it could be argued that my website isn’t really addressed for anyone…” to which I replied “lol” and also “oh!”

In the end, I ponder a little bit about whether the difference between Daniel and me has anything to do with feeling happy. Then Daniel rounds out the show with his song Glory, Overpopulation!

Even though it’s all kinda tragic, it makes me LOL, not in small part due to the hymn’s tune.  Guess it’s one of those “if we didn’t laugh, we’d cry” situations.  For today, I’m going with the laughter.

What I’m trying to do in this and the next three shows (C35, S35, P35) is to pick at Daniel a little bit, in search for an explanation of why I feel such a gap between the way I am and the way Daniel is – even though I don’t quite disagree with a word he says.

So far, I haven’t gotten to it.  But today’s show is my first stab, for what it’s worth.

We also touch on various topics along the way, including objective truth, black and white thinking, our similar and dissimilar goals, and being a ‘Denial Buster.’

Today Daniel said “Ultimately, the real objective answer comes from within… because we are all perfect deep inside, we all know the truth deep inside.”  I’m going to be pondering that one for a good long while.

Another thing he said was “Just test it for yourself!”

And for that I’ll give him an Amen.

Today Daniel describes the four stages he sees people go through as they grow from trauma to enlightenment, which are
1. Dissociation; 2. Suffering; 3. Grieving; 4. Enlightenment. (Ta da!)

Then Daniel “puts on his imagination cap” and describes his vision of an enlightened world.

I must say, it really sounds quite lovely, and I’d like to live there.

When asked, How does one find one’s true self?  he said: Be as honest with yourself as you possibly can be.

Kinda really simple, and kinda really really really hard.

Daniel also lists several things you can do to connect with your true self (apparently the same thing as “self-therapy,” I realized today). If you want to see some of those ideas in black and white, here is an essay Daniel wrote on the subject.

I also recommend his little book on self-therapy (written with his best friend Fred, who I can testify is also a rare (and delightful) soul.) Even though it’s only 44 pages, I recommend taking a year to read it, because it’s not the reading that matters – it’s the actual doing that makes the difference.

So many people claim to know the secrets to being “happy, healthy and wise.” From where I’m sitting, it seems the only place you’ll ever really find those secrets are buried deep inside you.

So how ’bout go on in there, pull up a comfy chair with yourself, and stay awhile.

Okay, are we all doing a good job with our deep breathing?  Good, good.

Daniel Mackler has a message that (I think) is very important. It’s also a very painful one to hear. If you’re a parent (or a parent wannabe) and you’re willing to listen to what he has to say, you’re more humble and courageous than most, and I thank you.

All of Season Six (16 episodes) is dedicated to Daniel’s views about truth, the true self, trauma, healing and growing up. If you want to learn how this could become a truly healed and happy world, I hope you’ll listen carefully, breathe deeply, and find out what your own inner self has to say about it all.

In Season Six I’m playing  Daniel’s music.  In today’s song he sings:

I see parents having kids and then they break their little hearts,
They crush their perfect lives before they get a chance to start.
But still I know there’s hope because I see it in my sight,
That’s why I’ve come to spread the message
that it’s time to set things right.

When I heard Daniel’s vision for the world, it was the first time – ever – that I had a glimmer that maybe… maybe… there was something good about having hope.   I must admit I’m still awfully wary of the concept – but I’m open to changing my mind.  And if I do, you guys will be among the very first to know.  I’ll keep you posted.

It was when I got a text from Nicole Martin that asked “Were you always the way you are?” that the idea for Season 5 was born.  Although I did my best to answer her questions (like “What were you like when you were tiny?”) I’m not sure if I really got to her main question, of how I got to be “this way.”  Oh well, we had fun anyway (y’know, that laughing/crying sort of fun….)
